Eclipse teams shine at Memorial Day Cup
Three Eclipse Soccer Club teams captured first place in their divisions at the 2010 AHFC Memorial Day Cup on May 29-30.

 Eclipse 96B White, pictured here, won the boys’ U14 Gold bracket, winning all three of its round-robin matches by a combined score of 7-0 before posting a 3-0 win in the final over Lonestar SC 96 Red Buda in the championship match.

 Eclipse 96G white won the girls’ U14 Silver bracket in similar fashion, outscoring opponents 8-0 across four matches, including a 2-0 win over Albion Hurricanes 96 Black in the final.  And Eclipse 99G Black took home the trophy in the girls’ U11 Gold division, defeating Albion Hurricanes 99 Blue 3-2 to clinch first.

 Two Eclipse teams finished second in their divisions – Eclipse 97G Black in girls’ U13 Gold and Eclipse 00B Lunar in boys’ new U11 Gold.

Eclipse 94 Black clinches spot in State Classic League

Eclipse 94B Black defeated Austin’s Forza FC on May 23 to earn a berth in the State Classic League for the 2010 fall season.  The SCL is made up of the top 8 teams in south Texas and includes teams from both Eastern and
Western Districts.

In addition to qualifying for SCL, Eclipse 94 Black plays for the National Cup state title May 29-31 at Lindsay/Lyons Park. Good luck, boys!

Green Machine wins Spring Shootout
Congratulations to the Green Machine, winners of the recent U14 Eclipse Recreational Spring Shootout.   Green Machine prevailed on penalties in the championship match, 2-1, after finishing second in the round-robin portion of the tournament.  The team is coached by Aivars Izaks.  Well done, boys

Eclipse U18 rec team takes first
The Eclipse U18 boys recreational team finished first in HYSA Spring 2010 league play with a 6-0-2 record.  Many of these players have been together with Coach Art Erickson for the past seven years, proving that recreational
soccer doesn’t end at U14! 

“We competed against some strong select teams in our bracket and finished first in Division 2 play,” Erickson said.   “I’m extremely proud of these players.”

Eclipse 99 Black captured first place in the GOLD division at the
2010 AHFC Memorial Day Cup on May 29-30.

Eclipse 99 Black, pictured here, won the girls’ U11 Gold bracket, winning all three of its round-robin matches by a combined score of 6-1 (2 shutouts) before posting a 3-2 win in the final over Albion Hurricanes 99G BLUE in the championship match.
 

The ladies had good spacing, made nice passes, communicated with each other, and finished first overcoming the opponents and the heat.  This is a result of lots of practicing during the week with the trainers.  As a team, we appreciate the dedication from the club.

Angel Carrillo, goalkeeper for Eclipse 92B White
Angel signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Johnson & Wales University in Miami beginning next fall.  Carrillo will play for Coach Bob Lennon in the NAIA’s Sun Conference. He joins Santiago Baston of Eclipse 92B Black as Wildcat 2010 signees.  Eclipse Soccer Club congratulates Angel and wishes him the best!

95 White wraps up great season
Eclipse 95B White advanced to the Eastern District tournament of South Texas Cup with an unbeaten mark in qualifying play, and fell just one goal short of a spot in the state tourney.  Heading into the STC district tournament, 95 White had a 14-match unbeaten streak that stretched back to the fall.   95 White is trained by Mihail Balaban and is managed by Brett Kunnemann with assistance from Gary McGee.  Eclipse trainer Xavi Alvarez  is pictured here with the team.  Congratulations on a great season!

Eclipse Premier keeper joins Dynamo Academy
Graham Wheeler from Eclipse 93B Premier has joined the Houston Dynamo Academy and has been named starting goalkeeper for the Academy’s U18 squad.

Wheeler was captain for Eclipse 93 Premier and a real leader on and off the field, according to Eclipse Director of Coaching Luis Labastida.  “Graham has matured into a strong player with a very bright future,” says Labastida.  “He is already getting a good deal of attention from the Dynamo senior staff.”

For several seasons, Wheeler served as a back-up to Fernando Pina, now a member of U.S. Soccer’s residency program in Florida and keeper for the U.S. men’s U17 team.  “Graham just kept quietly working hard and getting better and now it’s his turn to shine,” says Labastida. Wheeler is the son of Kevin and Susan Wheeler.  He is junior at Katy Taylor High School.

Eclipse girls all action against SportsTalk 790
The radio personalities at KBME SportsTalk 790 were no match for the fearsome foursome from Eclipse 95 Black at Robertson Stadium on May 1.  The girls from Eclipse routed the SportsTalk team 4-0 in a brief halftime showcase, proving once and for all that the radio guys had underestimated what it takes to be successful on the pitch. 

Congratulations to Eclipse 95 Black’s Kara Marshall, Jennifer Rush, Rachel Smith and Kaitlyn Kaltenbaugh for their convincing victory and for representing the club in such a positive way. And thanks to SportsTalk 790's Adam Wexler, Matt Jackson, Matt Thomas and Dylan Gwinn for being great sports and for helping to promote the beautiful game!

91G wins HYSA bracket
Congratulations to Eclipse 91G, which captured first place in the HYSA spring U18 bracket on Sunday with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Westbury Stars at Lost Creek Park.  It was an emotional match for the team’s seniors, who played their last game with Eclipse.  Coach Rob Salsman thanked the club and his team’s parents for their support over the years and wished his players the best as they head off to college in the fall.

Solar Eclipse takes Tax Time tourney title
Solar Eclipse 00 captured first place in the U10 Silver bracket at West Houston Soccer Club’s Tax Time Tournament April 24-25.  Solar Eclipse won all four of its tournament matches and did not concede a goal!   The team is managed by Don Hickel.  Congratulations, girls!

Baston signs with JWU
Eclipse 92B Black midfielder/fullback Santiago Baston has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Johnson & Wales University in Miami, beginning next fall.   JWU Coach Bobby Lennon believes Baston can be an “impact player” for the Wildcats, who compete in the NAIA’s Sun Conference. 

Baston plans to major in business administration with a specialty in sports management, and JWU has a unique program that provides opportunities to intern with professional soccer clubs in England.  Plus, he will be close to the ocean so he can continue to surf, his second passion after soccer!  

Santiago is the son of Luis and Aida Baston.  Eclipse Soccer Club wishes Santi all the best at JWU!

Livingston selected for Dynamo Junior Academy
Congratulations to Andrew Livingston, who was recently selected to train with the Houston Dynamo Junior Academy.    The Junior Academy provides supplemental training twice a week while allowing players to remain with their club teams.  The goal is to identify players with potential and prepare them for promotion to the Dynamo Academy U-16 team.  Well done, Andrew!

97 Black wins Houston Easter Invitational
Eclipse 97G Black captured the U13 gold bracket of the 17th Houston Easter Invitational tournament played at Bear Creek on April 2-3.  The girls won three matches and tied one in winning the first-place trophy, scoring 17 goals and conceding none throughout the tournament.  Eclipse 97 Black is trained by Steve Williams and managed by Poly Isis.

Wall signs with Notre Dame
Long-time Eclipse Soccer Club player Pat Wall recently signed a national letter of intent to play at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., beginning this fall. 

Wall joined Eclipse at U7 and was with the club for 10 years, eventually becoming the starting goalkeeper for Eclipse 91 Black.  He helped lead 91 Black to a bronze medal in the 2009 Southern Regional Championships, where the team was eliminated by the eventual national champions.   In addition to playing for Eclipse, Wall also served as an assistant coach on the recreational side of the club for six seasons, working with young players in the U5, U6 and U7 age groups. 

He currently plays for the Houston Dynamo Academy U18 team.

Eclipse girls take on Puerto Rico National Team
Eclipse 93 Black and Eclipse 95 Black hosted the Puerto Rico Women's National Team at Lost Creek Park on March 7, 2010. Each Eclipse team played a half against the PRWNT, with Puerto Rico winning 2-0.  Puerto Rico was in Houston to play a spring scrimmage against Houston Baptist University.

Eclipse players enjoy Dynamo Academy experience
Three players from Eclipse Soccer Club’s U11 Black team are training with the Houston Dynamo Junior Academy U12 squad.  Luke Dunn, Daniel Shahim and Abdullah Mirza, from left in the accompanying photo, were selected for the team following tryouts.  The Junior Academy curriculum focuses solely on skill and technique development and allows players to continue with their club teams since there are no Dynamo Academy matches

Galaxy Eclipse takes first
Galaxy Eclipse 01 won first place in the Gold bracket of the 2010 National Fusion Winter Classic, defeating Lunar Eclipse 01 on penalties in the championship match.  The two teams had battled to a 2-2 draw after extra time before advancing to penalties.  Galaxy Eclipse 01 is managed by Mario Rivera with help from assistants Scott Paxton and John Franklin.

Solar Eclipse takes first
Solar Eclipse 01 captured first place in the U9 Silver bracket of the National Fusion Winter Classic 2010, Feb. 19-21.  The girls finished round-robin play with a two wins and one draw and went on to defeat Jasper Twisters  2-1 in the championship match.   Solar Eclipse scored 12 goals in its four tournament matches.  Well done, girls!

Cosmic Eclipse wins NEYSO Groundhog tourney
Cosmic Eclipse 00 captured first place in the boys U10 bracket at the NEYSO Groundhog tournament in San Antonio Jan. 30-31.  The team also finished first in HYSA’s top bracket in the fall with a record of 8-1-1.  Well done, boys!

97B Black wins Albion tournament
Eclipse Soccer Club’s top U13 boys team captured first place in the recent Albion Hurricanes Spring Cup.  97 Black finished first in its group play bracket with wins over Lonestar Red and Albion 97 Blue and a draw with Texans Red.  The team then defeated Albion 98 Blue – winners of the other group play bracket – in the championship match, 5-2.  Eclipse 97 Black is managed by Adam Saleh.  Well done, boys

Congratulations to Eclipse 99G Black
Eclipse Soccer Club’s top U11 girls team won the National bracket of the recent Eclipse Invitational tournament.  The girls advanced to the championship match against Texas Rush Nike Blue with a strong showing in group play and a 5-2 semi-final win.  In the final, 99 Black and Texas Rush battled to 0-0 draw in regulation before Eclipse stepped up to win the first-place trophy on penalties. The team is managed by Jamie Ellis.  Well done, girls!

98 Black wins Express tournament
Eclipse 98B Black defeated Houston Express Navy 2-0 to win the U12 bracket of the Houston Express Adidas Cup on Sunday, Feb. 7.  The team finished the tournament with a record of three wins and one draw and only conceded two goals in four matches.  Eclipse U12 Black is managed by Scott Rivenes.  Well done, boys!

Eclipse 97G Black qualifies for State Classic League
Eclipse Soccer Club’s top U13 girls team not only won its bracket at the Eclipse Invitational tournament Jan. 29-31 … the girls also qualified for the 2011 spring State Classic League since two tournament matches counted toward qualification.  By going unbeaten in the tournament with two wins and two draws – and winning and drawing the qualification matches – 97 Black took home the championship trophy and secured a spot in the SCL. 

The team will be one of six representatives from the Eastern District Division One Association (EDDOA) competing against the best teams from the west.  

97 Black is trained by Steve “Willie” Williams and managed by Poly Isis.

Eclipse 96B Black wins Texan Madness tourney

Eclipse Black captured first place in the top U14 bracket at the Texan Madness 2010 tournament Jan. 30-31, winning all three matches by identical 2-1 scores.   The team was forced to play with only 10 players in one match and 11 in another due to injuries and conflicts with school activities.  Congratulations, U14 Black!

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital extends sponsorship

 
 

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital (MSLH) has extended its sponsorship of Eclipse Soccer Club. 

Methodist and Eclipse recently reached a multi-year agreement that will promote Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas (MOST) to all Eclipse players, parents, team managers, coaches and volunteers.  As part of the agreement, MOST conducts weekly sports medicine clinics at Sugar Land’s Lost Creek Park, Eclipse’s home field, and will provide VIP cards to expedite treatment at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and at Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas. The Club also plans to team up with MSLH on other initiatives that can benefit the community, such as the recent Score for the Cause fund-raiser in support of breast cancer awareness and treatment which raised more than $6,700 for the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital/ Fort Bend Junior Service League Breast Cancer Fund. 

“Methodist Orthopedic Specialists of Texas has a long history of being deeply involved in supporting youth sports and keeping young athletes healthy, fit and in the game,” said Chris Siebenaler, CEO of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.  “We’re proud to extend our relationship with Eclipse and to be an important part of the club’s effort to develop successful athletes at all levels of competition.” 

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital will continue as the primary jersey sponsor of the Eclipse recreational program.  The hospital’s logo will be added to the club’s competitive team jerseys in the future.  Eclipse plans to use funds from the sponsorship to provide scholarships to cover training fees, improve and enhance field conditions and expand the club’s activities and offerings. 

“Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas are a perfect fit for Eclipse,” said Rick Safier, president of Eclipse Soccer Club.  “Our goal for the sponsorship is to move beyond the basics and create a partnership that leverages the expertise, technology and health care services of Methodist in order to benefit our young athletes and their families.”

93G Black wins group at prestigious Disney Showcase

 
  Congratulations to Eclipse 93G Black, which went undefeated at the Disney Soccer Showcase in Orlando, Fla., over the New Year’s Day weekend.

The Disney Soccer Showcase features top teams from across the country. Eclipse 93 Black qualified for the tournament by winning the State Cup in the summer.

The U17 girls advanced out of their bracket and to the championship match by defeating Maine Coast United SC Magic 7-0 and Sunrise (Fla.) SC Fire 3-1 and drawing with Wayzata SC Rage from Minnesota 1-1. In the final, Eclipse Black defeated Carmel United Elite from Indiana 1-0 to win their group in the Copa Flight.

“This tops off a great year for the team,” said Eclipse Director of Coaching Mac McCallum.

McCallum said the team’s performance at the Disney Showcase is a true reflection of the quality on the girls side of the club, since the squad also included players from the U-16 and U-15 age groups.

“Congratulations to all these players and their parents,” McCallum said. “The club is extremely proud of their success.”
